Depression is a common mental disorder.  According to the World Health Organization, globally more than 300 million people of all ages suffer from depression. More women than men are affected. Depression is the leading cause of disability worldwide, and is a major contributor to the overall global burden of disease.

What are the most common symptoms of major depressive disorder?

Depressive episodes are categorized as mild, moderate or severe. A wide range of both physical and emotional symptoms may occur such as

  • Sadness
  • Difficulty making decisions
  • Disturbed sleep
  • Disturbed appetite
  • Suicidal thoughts

What happens in the brain during depression?

During depression, the circuit in the brain that controls mood is not working properly.  The brain is simply not operating at full strength in the area responsible for emotion.

The impact of depression

depressionThe impact of depression can be severe and include
… a serious, chronic health condition especially when symptoms become long lasting.
…a negative impact on a person’s ability to function at work and at home.
…a significant risk factor for suicide; an estimated 800.000 people die each year due to suicide.
…a major socioeconomic burden to society.

Treating depression with TMS

Although depression is associated with serious illness and mortality, it is, however, also a treatable condition. For the treatment of mild-moderate depression, antidepressant pharmacotherapy and/or psychotherapy is the most common therapy. A significant number of patients, however, do not experience benefit from antidepressant medications and/or they cannot tolerate the side effects of the medication.

Patients who fail to receive satisfactory improvement are considered as “treatment-resistant”, and thus are suffering from so-called “treatment-resistant depression” (TRD).  For those patients, there is another option called transcranial magnetic stimulation, or TMS in short. TMS is a non-invasive brain stimulation technique that is offered as a non-pharmacological treatment modality for patients with treatment-resistant depression.

MagVenture TMS Therapy is FDA cleared for treatment of Major Depressive Disorder in adult patients who have failed to receive satisfactory improvement from prior antidepressant medication in the current episode.
